12 Reviews of Christmas - Mickey's Christmas Carol (1983)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, it's now Christmas Eve, which means it's the last day of 12 Reviews of Christmas. Much like last year, we'll be taking a look at an adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel A Christmas Carol. This year, we'll be taking a look at the first version of A Christmas Carol I've ever seen: Mickey's Christmas Carol. Now, I'm not going to go into discussing the story, as I've already done so last year with the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol. However, I'd like to discuss a few things with this animated holiday classic.

So, let's start off with who's who in this version of A Christmas Carol. Scrooge McDuck takes on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, with Donald Duck as Scrooge's nephew Fred. Mickey Mouse is Bob Crachit, with Minnie as Mrs. Crachit. The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future are portrayed respectively by Jiminy Cricket, Willie the Giant and Pete the Dog. Daisy Duck plays Isabel, and Goofy is the ghost of Jacob Marley. The two charity collectors are the mole and water rat from The Wind in the Willows, while Mr. Toad, from the same short film, is Fezziwig.

What really sets this version of A Christmas Carol apart from the others, aside from the characters in the book being portrayed by characters from across the Disney universe, is how short it is. At a run time of twenty-six minutes, this animated featurette is able to tell the complete story of A Christmas Carol within a short run time. I enjoyed watching this one as a kid, and that's the main reason I picked it up on Blu-ray as an adult. It's a staple of my holiday season, and for good reason. There are a lot of good versions of A Christmas Carol out there, but Mickey's Christmas Carol is my personal favorite, and therefore gets a rating of 5/5.

Well, that wraps up 12 Reviews of Christmas for this year. Thanks for tuning in, and my next reviews, which will include both We Can Be Heroes and the new Pixar movie Soul, will arrive starting January 2nd. Until then, this is Chuck signing off. See you guys in the new year.
