Review - Once Upon a Snowman (2020)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, as we approach the holiday season, it's time to, once again, dive into the world of Disney's Frozen. However, I'm not talking about the 2015 short film Frozen Fever. Instead, I'm talking about an all new short film titled Once Upon a Snowman. Don't worry, I'm  still planning to cover Frozen Fever some time next March to be sure. But for now, let's dig into the latest Frozen short, released just last month on Disney+: Once Upon a Snowman.

The short opens with Elsa, during the "Let it Go" segment of the movie Frozen, as she assembles a snowman that resembles Olaf, the snowman she and Anna made as children. Suddenly, the snowman comes to life and is knocked off the mountain by Elsa's cape blowing in the breeze. As the snowman wanders around, wanting to know who he is, he walks into Wandering Oaken's trading post, just as Anna walks out, and Kristoff is in the barn singing "Reindeers are Better Than People" to Sven. It is in the shop that Oaken offers a series of noses for the snowman, with the snowman walking out with a "Summer sausage" as his nose. The snowman, while following in the path of Anna, Kristoff, and Sven, is chased by hungry wolves after his nose. At the end of the chase, he loses the nose, whish is destroyed by the sleigh that Anna and Kristoff crashed into the bottom of the ravine. The snowman comes across a lone wolf, who licks his face, with the snowman commenting that it feels like a warm hug. Suddenly, memories come pouring in, and the snowman realizes what his name is. Finally, he says the famous line: "I'm Olaf, and I like warm hugs." With his newfound identity, Olaf catches up with Anna, Kristoff, and Sven, entering into when he meets them in the actual movie.

Once Upon a Snowman is really cute. I like how it's set in the middle of some major scenes from the first Frozen, and shows what Olaf was up to between "Let it Go" and his intro in the movie. The idea of Olaf starting off with an identity crisis was a neat one, and seeing him try out different noses was pretty funny. I did enjoy getting to hear the voices from the movie, although the only two with any new dialogue were Josh Gad as Olaf and Chris Williams as Oaken. Everyone else was archived audio from the first Frozen. Overall, a cute little Frozen short, and I definitely recommend checking it out. Once Upon a Snowman gets a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time.
