Review - Birds of Prey (2020)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I just got back from watching the latest entry of the DC Extended Universe, Birds of Prey. Now, I am aware that the full title of the movie is Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), but for the sake of timing, I'm just going to call it Birds of Prey.

Set some time after the events of the 2016 film, Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey picks up with Harley Quinn having broken up with the Joker, After dealing with depression of their break-up, Harley does something completely crazy, and now has a target on her head, as now she is no longer protected by being the Jokers' girlfriend. It is here that we meet Roman Sionis/Black Mask, a Gotham City mobster, who is after a priceless diamond with the bank information to access a fortune engraved upon it. Unfortunately, the diamond is swiped by a teenage girl named Cassandra Cain, and now Harley, along with GCPD Detective Renee Montoya, lounge singer Dinah Lance/Black Canary, and mercenary Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, work to keep Cassandra safe from the criminal scum of Gotham City.

There are quite a few things that I really liked in this movie. First of all, Margot Robbie's performance as Harley Quinn was spectacular. Now, she is the center of the movie, but it's actually a lot of fun. I also really liked both Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Huntress and Black Canary, respectively. Both actresses gave a different dynamic than we've seen with previous incarnations of the two characters, and they definitely stood out in this movie. Ewan McGregor was terrific as Black Mask, and while there were times where he was a bit too creepy, which I didn't care for, his energy was top notch, and he was very enjoyable as the villain of the picture. I also really enjoyed Rosie Perez as Montoya. It's really nice to focus on a Gotham City cop who isn't Commissioner Gordon. Another interesting character was Black Mask's henchman Victor Zsasz, played by Chris Messina. Believe me, this version of Zsasz definitely stood out more than the cameo version of Zsasz did in Batman Begins, and Chris definitely portrayed him with a comics-accurate creep factor, which I really appreciate.

Now, there are a couple of things I didn't care for in the movie, one is how creepy Black Mask was, and the other was the repeated use of flashbacks throughout the movie. However, these are only minor issues, and don't break the movie for me. Quite the contrary, in fact. I really enjoyed the movie, and I'm definitely looking forward to Margot Robbie's next cinematic outing as Harley Quinn, which will be in August of 2021 in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. As far as DCEU films go, Birds of Prey is among the better ones. Much like Aquaman and Shazam demonstrated, it seems that WB/DC are finally making great movies. I'm going to go ahead and give Birds of Prey a rating of 4.9/5. This is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time.
