My Thoughts on the 2020 Academy Awards

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, last night was the 92nd annual Academy Awards ceremony. That's Right, the Oscars were last night. Unfortunately, due to attending a comic book convention earlier tat day, I didn't return home in time to watch the beginning of the ceremony. However, I did watch the remainder of the show and well, here are my thoughts on the Oscars.

Now, I should point out that Joker, which led the nomination count with eleven nominations, took home two Oscars last night, Best Original Score for Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Laura Dern took home Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story, Brad Pitt took home Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Renee Zellweger took home Best Actress for Judy. Pixar's Toy Story 4 took home Best Animated Feature, and the song "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" from Rocketman took home Best Original Song. Sam Mendes' latest film, 1917, won awards in the technical categories, taking home Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects, while other winners in the technical categories were Ford v Ferrari for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing, Bombshell for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for Best Production Design, and Little Women for Best Costume Design. The awards for Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Short Subject went to American Factory and Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (if You're a Girl), respectively, and the awards for Best Live-Action Shot Film and Best Animated Short Film went to The Neighbors' Window and Hair Love, respectively. Lastly, Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit took home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

However, the biggest surprise of the evening was the number of awards that were won by the South Korean film, Parasite. Now, while I did expect it to win the award for Best International Feature Film, I was surprised when it also won for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and most surprisingly of all, Best Picture.

Much like the previous year's ceremony, the Oscars went without a host once again. However, the presenters were all quite memorable. Among my favorites were Steven Spielberg, Taika Waititi, Mark Ruffalo, Zazie Beetz, Mahershala Ali, Tom Hanks, Sigourney Weaver, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Will Ferrell. I'd also like to point out that both Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman, Brie Larson and Gal Gadot, were on stage together alongside Sigourney Weaver. The fact that two stars from the worlds of Marvel and DC Comics' movies was pretty cool. There were also a great number of musical performances, including Billie Eilish during the In Memoriam segment, Idina Menzel and an international group of singers performing a multi-language rendition of "Into the Unknown" from Frozen II, and most enjoyably of all, Eminem performing his song "Lose Yourself" from the movie 8 Mile. Despite all of the censorship, I did really enjoy seeing Eminem performing one of his most famous tunes. However, I would like to point out one thing, and that is this: during the presentation of the award for Best Visual Effect, what the EFF were James Corden and Rebel Wilson doing dressed and EFFING CATS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I mean, seriously, what was the point of that? This isn't the Kids' Choice Awards or the MTV Movie & TV Awards. these are the Oscars. Save that kind of stuff for those other two awards shows. I'm sorry, but that was just too weird.

All in all, last night's Oscars ceremony was full of surprises. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what films get in for next year's Oscars. Next month is the Kids' Choice Awards on Nickelodeon, and I'll most likely be checking those out as well. Until then, this is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time.
