My Thoughts on the 2020 Golden Globe Awards

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I hope you guys all enjoyed New Years. I've got a lot of reviews line up for the year, including one or two themed months this year. Now, as I have said previously, reviews on Chuck's Movie Breakdown will resume on Thursday the 16th of this month. However, I decided to make this special post sharing my thoughts on this evening's Golden Globe Awards ceremony, which is the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony held overall. The event was hosted by British actor and comedian Ricky Gervais, who marks his fifth time hosting the Golden Globes.

It should be noted that unlike the Oscars, which I will discuss after their awards ceremony next month, the Golden Globes divide their Best Motion Picture awards into two categories: Drama and Musical/Comedy. Of all of the movies nominated for the top prize of Best Motion Picture, I've only watched two of them, and those would be Todd Phillips' Joker and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Now, I should also note that the Golden Globes cover the best in both film and television. However, the name of this blog is Chuck's Movie Breakdown. Therefore, I will primarily be covering the movie side of things with my thoughts on the Golden Globes. However, I would like to congratulate both Russell Crowe and Stellan Skarsgård for their wins in television tonight. Both are tremendous performers, and they deserved the awards they received tonight. With that out of the way, let's take a look at the films, directors, and actors who took home Golden Globe Awards.

Let's start with the awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Foreign Language Film, with the winners of each category being the Laika produced film Missing Link, and the South Korean film Parasite. In one of the music categories, the Elton John biopic, Rocketman, won for Best Original Song for it's song "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again." This came as a surprise to me, as Disney's Frozen II was nominated for both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Into the Unknown." While I did hope that Frozen II would win tonight, I congratulate Rocketman and Missing Link for their awards wins.

Now, let's take a look at some of the performance awards. Laura Dern won for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Marriage Story, Taron Egerton, who I enjoyed in the Kingsman movies, won Best Actor - Musical/Comedy for his performance as Elton John in Rocketman, Awkwafina won Best Actress - Musical/Comedy for her performance in The Farewell, and Renée Zellweger won Best Actress - Drama for her role as Judy Garland in Judy.

Two films won pretty big tonight, and those were Sam Mendes' World War I epic 1917, and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Both films won for Best Motion Picture for Drama and Musical/Comedy, respectively, Tarantino took home the award for Best Original Screenplay, Sam Mendes took home the award for Best Director, and actor Brad Pitt won the award for Best Supporting Actor. Another film that did really well tonight was Todd Phillips' Joker. Joker won for Best Actor-Drama for Joaquin Phoenix, and Best Original Score for Icelandic Cellist/composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. This was Hildur's first Golden Globes win.

I'd also like to point out that Tom Hanks was this year's recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. This is an honorary award bestowed for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. It is awarded to honorees who have made a significant mark in the film industry and is named after filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, who was the first recipient of the award. As someone who has watched Tom Hanks since early childhood, particularly films like Forrest Gump and Toy Story, I definitely think he deserved this award.

Now, a number of the presenters were pretty forgettable, but the few that stood out the most to me were Kate McKinnon, Ted Danson, Kerry Washington, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, and Ana de Armas. The host, Ricky Gervais, was pretty funny at the top of the show, and as the show went on his jokes, while funny, were starting to distract from the main show. Overall, the Golden Globes were really good this year. Congratulations, once again, to all the winners, especially Joaquin Phoenix for his role in Joker. Next month, we have the Academy Awards, which I will also be discussing when they air that night. This is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time.
