Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2019

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I hope everyone had a great Christmas the other day. I, for one, certainly did. Well, seeing as it's the end of the year, I thought I'd take a look back at the movies this year and count down some of my favorites. Now, as I've mentioned in the past, these are all my opinion, and I'd like to point out that I didn't see every movie that came out this year. So, don't expect films like Jordan Peele's Us or Martin Scorsese's The Irishman to be here. But, without further ado, here are my Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2019.

Before we get into the Top 10, here are a few honorable mentions that didn't quite make the cut: Zombieland: Double Tap - fun exciting horror comedy, with a little bit of a been-there-done-that vibe; It - Chapter Two - great concluding follow-up to 2017's It, but not as good as the first film; Glass - great continuation of both Unbreakable and Split, but fell short in the third act; Hobbs & Shaw - enjoyed the four leads with Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, and Vanessa Kirby, and thought it was a fun side entry in the Fast & Furious series; Spider-Man: Far From Home - great follow-up to Endgame, but not as good as Spider-Man: Homecoming; Godzilla: King of the Monsters - more monster action than 2014's Godzilla, but the human story wasn't very interesting; Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio were great, Margot Robbie was good, but probably not one of Tarantino's stronger films. Okay, now that that's out of the way, here are the ten that did make it on my list:

     # 10 - Aladdin: Inspired from the 1993 animated Disney classic, which itself was based on an Arabian folktale, Guy Ritchie's Aladdin was action-packed, amazing, and had one of my all-time favorites, Will Smith, as the Genie. I also really liked Naomi Scott, who was amazing as the Pink Ranger in 2017's Power Rangers, as Princess Jasmine. While not perfect, it was still a lot of fun, and definitely a favorite.

     # 9 - Shazam: Based in the world of DC Comics, this action-comedy romp had a lot of fun with its premise. Zachary Levi was terrific, and he clearly had a lot of fun with this movie. With a sequel already set for a release date of April 1, 2022, I definitely want to see more from this character.

     # 8 - Pokémon: Detective Pikachu: As a child of the 90's. grew up really loving the original Pokémon on Kids' WB. so, seeing a live-action Pokémon movie was a dream come true. Add in great performances by Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith, Bill Nighy, Ken Watanabe, and Kathryn Newton, as well as a who's who of Pokémon scattered throughout the movie, and you've got a great time at the theater.

     # 7 - Alita: Battle Angel: Producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez delivered what many would argue is one of the better live-action films based on a popular anime. Rosa Salazar was terrific, as were Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, and Mahershala Ali. Add in a end of the movie cameo by Edward Norton, and you've got a film that I wouldn't mind seeing follow-ups to.

     # 6 - Captain Marvel: The first MCU movie to be headlined by a female superhero, this film was a lot of fun. Brie Larson was great, Samuel L. Jackson was terrific, and the likes of Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, and Annette Bening were great as well. Add a lot of 90's throwbacks and you've got a fun superhero movie that I enjoyed thoroughly.

     # 5 - Frozen II: The sequel to Disney's highly successful Frozen, this was the animated film that I was most excited for. Great music and great performances by the returning voice actors, this movie not only shows how much we still love these characters and this world, but also how far animation has come in the six years since Frozen was released.

     # 4 - Joker: A surprise to a lot of people, Todd Phillips' film about a man with a mental illness who fails as a stand-up comic, and goes on to become the greatest villain in the worlds of DC comics was very good. Joaquin Phoenix was terrific, Robert DeNiro was memorable, and the dark tone was perfect for this film that's a definite shoe-in for the Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

     # 3 - The Lion King: Jon Favreau's re-telling of the animated Disney classic, which itself is a re-imagining of Shakespeare's classic Hamlet, was a visual marvel. Performances by the likes of Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen, and James Earl Jones really helped elevate this film, but the real star was the photorealistic computer animation that brought the characters to life.

     # 2 - Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The long-awaited conclusion to the Skywalker Saga, J.J. Abrams delivered an epic film with great action, great characters, more fan service than you can shake a lightsaber at, and a real sense of finality. Love it or hate it, but this is one that I'm glad I got to see on opening night.

     # 1 - Avengers: Endgame: 11 years and 20+ MCU movies leading up to it, this was guaranteed the Number One spot from the moment the title was revealed when the first teaser dropped this time last year. I had been waiting to see this since I walked out of Infinity War last year, and the wait definitely paid off. Everyone was great, and both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans' characters got the send-off their characters deserved. Add in great performances by Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Brie Larson, as well as brilliant directing by the Russo brothers, and you've got what is easily my favorite film of 2019.

Well guys, there you have it, my Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2019. Be sure to stay tuned. as there are two more end-of-the-year countdowns I have to get through: the Top 10 Favorite Movies of the 2010's and the Top 10 Most-anticipated Movies of 2020. Until then, this is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time.
