Throwback Thursday/Countdown to "The Rise of Skywalker" - Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Hey guys, Chuck here, and it is, once again, Throwback Thursday. As the last two reviews I posted have made clear, we are also in the middle of the Countdown to The Rise of Skywalker, where I'm reviewing all of the live-action Star Wars movies to date. So, let's talk about the final entry of the Prequel Trilogy, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
Set a few years after Attack of the Clones, the galaxy is in the middle of a full-scale war between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist movement. The Jedi Order, assisted by an army of clone troopers are fighting against the droid army of the Separatists, led by Sith lord Count Dooku and the cyborg General Grievous, who has recently abducted Chancellor Palpatine. Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker have launched a rescue mission to save the Chancellor, which results in Dooku's death at Anakin's hands. Grievous, however, escapes and makes his way to the Utapau system, upon which the mysterious Darth Sidious orders him to send the Separatisi leaders to the volcanic world of Mustafar.
After the successful rescue of the Chancellor, Anakin learns that his wife, Padme, is pregnant with their child, which could mean trouble for them both as Anakin could be expelled from the Jedi Order if it was discovered that he was the father. Anakin, meanwhile, has been appointed a seat on the Jedi Council, at the behest of the Chancellor. However, the Jedi Council do not make him a Master, but request him to spy on the Chancellor for them, as Anakin and the Chancellor have a mutual trust of each other. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan is sent to Utapau to confront General Grievous, while Yoda travels to Kashyyyk to assist the Wookiees with the battalion of droids attacking the planet. Anakin also learns that Palpatine was the Sith Master, Darth Sidious, all along. After informing Master Windu of this, Windu leads a team of Jedi to arrest the Chancellor, resulting in a battle which ends with the deaths of the Jedi sent to arrest the Chancellor, and Anakin stopping Windu from killing the Chancellor, and becoming Palpatine's new apprentice: Darth Vader.
Anakin, along with a battalion of clones, launches an attack on the Jedi Temple, killing all of the Jedi in the temple, including the Younglings (children training in the ways of the Jedi). Meanwhile, Palpatine issues a message to the clone troops across the galaxy with a single order: "Execute Order 66." With this order given, the clones turn on the Jedi Knights leading them and gun them down in cold blood. The only two Masters to survive the attack are Obi-Wan and Yoda, who return to Coruscant to learn what happened. Meanwhile, Anakin is sent to Mustafar to wipe out the Separatist leaders, including Viceroy Gunray of the Trade Federation. On Coruscant, Palpatine speaks in front of the Galactic Senate, including both Padme and Senator Organa, and announces that, for the safety of the Galaxy, the Republic would be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire. After learning the truth, Padme goes to Mustafar to speak to Anakin, while Obi-Wan stows away on her ship. Believing that she betrayed him, Anakin uses the Force against Padme, and proceeds to fight Obi-Wan across the planet, which results in Anakin having all of his remaining limbs sliced off, and being burned alive. Back on Coruscant, Yoda confronts the Emperor, and after fighting each other to a stalemate, Yoda retreats, and is picked up by Senator Organa.
The Emperor finds Anakin, and returns him to Coruscant, where he has his limbs replaced with mechanical ones, and has a life support suit built onto him, after which he is only known as Darth Vader. Meanwhile, Padme is dying from both Anakin's attack, as well as a broken heart. The medical droids attending her work quickly, however, as she gives birth to twins, a boy and a girl whom she names Luke and Leia. Senator Organa choses to adopt Leia and raise her with his wife on Alderaan, while Obi-Wan takes Luke to his aunt and uncle, Beru and Owen Lars, on Tatooine, remaining there to watch over the boy. All the while, Vader and the Emperor look over the starting of the construction of a new super-weapon, which would soon come to be known as the Death Star.
Fan response to Revenge of the Sith was much more positive compared to both The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. And I have to agree, I think that this one is the best of the Prequel Trilogy, and is definitely the one that had me on the edge of my seat the most. Seeing everything come full circle was really great, and learning how the Republic became the Empire was really cool. I also liked some of the new elements like General Grievous, who was a really cool looking villain and I'm glad we got to see more of him during the animated series The Clone Wars. As what was intended to be the last chapter of the Star Wars saga, Revenge of the Sith did a great job closing up plot lines set up in both The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, as well as setting up what we would see later on during the events of the Original Trilogy. Therefore, I give Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith a 4.5/5. This is Chuck signing off. See you guy next time when we dive into the Anthology Films starting with Solo: A Star Wars Story when the Countdown to The Rise of Skywalker continues.
