12 Reviews of Christmas - A Very Murray Christmas (2015)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Well, I guess we have an answer to the question of whether or not they can make a good Christmas special from a title that is literally a pun. Here it is: A Very Murray Christmas. Released on Netflix in 2015, this Sofia Coppola directed Christmas special features an all-star cast led by, of course, Bill Murray. So, let's take a look at A Very Murray Christmas.

It's Christmas Eve night at the Carlyle Hotel, and Bill Murray has come down with a case of the holiday blues. He's got a Christmas special filming live downstairs in the lounge, and everyone he invited couldn't make it due to there being a massive blizzard keeping any traffic in and out of New York shut down. After some convincing from his producers, Bill, along with Paul Shaffer and Dimitri Dimitrov, heads down to the lounge to perform his special, being stopped by a sleazy Hollywood agent, played by Michael Cera. After a disastrous start to his special, Bill meets up with Chris Rock, who begrudgingly agrees to appear in Bill's special. During their performance of the classic holiday tune "Do You Hear What I Hear?" the power goes out, Chris takes off, and the special is called off due to the power outage.

Relieved from his commitment to his special, Bill heads to the bar, where he engages with the waitress, the bartender, the chefs, a lounge singer, and an engaged couple whose wedding plans were derailed due to the blizzard. Enjoying the food from the kitchen and drinks from the bar, Bill and co. lift their Christmas special by performing different Christmas songs. After singing, eating, and drinking quite a bit to celebrate the holidays, Bill passes out, where he dreams of being part of a proper special, with George Clooney and Miley Cyrus both performing with him. After performing a few songs with Clooney and Miley, Bill wakes up in his suite, looking out the window to see it's Christmas morning.

A Very Murray Christmas was very entertaining. Alongside of Bill Murray, the cast of the special included the likes of Amy Poehler, Jenny Lewis, Maya Rudolph, Jason Schwartzman, Rashida Jones, and a whole host of others, all of whom share their comedic and musical talents. The songs performed throughout the special were terrific, and I found myself humming along with them. The setting of the Carlyle Hotel was a nice touch, and it's great that they were able to film on location. Overall, A Very Murray Christmas is a terrific special that I watch every year on Netflix, and I give it a rating of 4.5/5. This is Chuck singing off. See you guys next time as the 12 Reviews of Christmas continues.
