12 Reviews of Christmas - Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017)

Hey guys, Chuck here. What? You thought I was done talking about Frozen? Nope! As part of the 12 Reviews of Christmas, I'm taking a look at one of the two Frozen short films that Disney released in between the release of Frozen and the release of Frozen II. The first was Frozen Fever, which I'll probably cover some time in the future, and the second, which I'm talking about now, is a holiday short called Olaf's Frozen Adventure.

It's Christmas time in Arendelle, and everyone is getting ready. After ringing Yule Bell, Anna and Elsa are surprised to see everyone going home, despite having a huge party planned. It turns out that everyone in Arendelle is off to enjoy their Christmas traditions. Realizing that Anna and Elsa don't have one of their own, Olaf heads through town, along with Sven, to find some. After gathering a few traditions from the people, Olaf gets lost in the woods and the sleigh with the traditions is destroyed, with the only thing to survive being a fruitcake.

Back at Arendelle castle, Anna and Elsa realize that they DID have a tradition, and gather the entire town to help find Olaf. After finding him, Anna and Elsa reveal that their annual holiday tradition was Olaf himself. After Elsa cut herself off from Anna, Anna would bring a handmade card or trinket modeled after the snowman they made together: Olaf. Anna would always slide another one under Elsa's door every year around the holidays. With their tradition, Anna, Elsa, and everyone in Arendelle celebrate the Christmas holiday, and the fruitcake finds its way back to Olaf.

Olaf's Frozen Adventure had a limited theatrical run, being attached to Pixar's Coco at the time, and later airing on ABC before getting a stand-alone Blu-ray release. While some found the short to be a bit weak, I thought it was a nice little holiday treat for kids and those who are fans of Frozen. I thought the songs used in the short were nice, but only in the context of the short itself. Unlike "Into the Unknown" from Frozen II, I don't think any of the songs used here are going to be big breakout songs. If you like Frozen, and you want a fun little holiday treat featuring some beloved characters from a popular Disney movie, then I'd say go ahead and pick this one up, it's certainly worth your time. I'm going to go ahead and give Olaf's Frozen Adventure a rating if 4.5/5. This is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time as we continue the 12 Reviews of Christmas.
