12 Reviews of Christmas - Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special (2008)

Hey guys, Chuck here, and welcome to the start of the 12 Reviews of Christmas. I thought I'd kick off this series of yuletide reviews with Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special.

Aired initially on Comedy Central, and currently available to watch on Netflix, this comedy special was filmed live at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, and features a series of hilarious segments performed by Dunham and his various ventriloquist puppets. Jeff starts off with telling the story of watching a video of his daughter trying to put gasoline in a car, and then he performs with the following puppets, and each one is more hilarious than the last.

The first of the puppets is the ever-grouchy old curmudgeon Walter, who is annoyed with the different holiday greetings, and cracking a joke about Kwanzaa, which was pretty funny. The next puppet in the line-up is, of course, the skeletal goofball Achmed. Achmed tells a bunch of humorous anecdotes, and is joined by Brian Haner aka Guitar Guy in a parody of Jingle Bells called Jingle Bombs. The next puppet in the line-up is the drunken redneck Bubba J, who talks about being drunk, wanting a beer truck for Christmas, and sings a song about a deer that he ran over, took home, and used as a TV antenna. The song was called Roadkill Christmas, and it was a highlight for me. Last up in the line-up are goofy fuzzball Peanut and Jose the Jalapeno on a Stick. Peanut's bit was hysterical, and Jose was pretty funny as well, at least as funny as a talking jalapeno pepper on a stick wearing a sombrero can be.

Jeff Dunham is not only a great comedian, but in my opinion he's done a lot for ventriloquism as an artform. By combining ventriloquism with stand-up, Jeff has truly evolved the artform to appeal to all audiences. Overall, Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special is really funny, and a great stand-up special for the holiday season. I give it a rating of 4.25/5. This is Chuck signing off, and the 12 Reviews of Christmas is just getting started. See you guys next time.
