Throwback Thursday - Jimmy Neutron - Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion (2003)

Hey guys, Chuck here. Apologies for missing last week's Throwback Thursday, but unfortunately some things came up, and I was unable to post a Throwback Thursday review. However, this week, we're back on schedule for the time being, so let's talk about Nickelodeon's The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.

Based on the 2001 feature film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, the television spin-off series was one of Nickelodeon's most popular Nicktoons at the time, and along with shows like The Fairly OddParents, My Life as a Teenage Robot, All Grown Up, and SpongeBob SquarePants. Because of the show's popularity, Nickelodeon produced several specials and TV movies. One of those specials was called Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion. Cashing in on the popularity of the James Bond series of films, this made-for-TV movie features a special celebrity voice cast that included the likes of Christian Slater, Wendie Malick, Michael Clarke Duncan, Dan Castellaneta, and Tim Curry.

The special starts off with a James Bond style opening title sequence, followed by Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen going to see the latest Jet Fusion movie, Die Again Tomorrow Forever (a nod to the title of the James Bond movie Die Another Day). The next day, all of the kids at Lindberg Elementary are talking about the movie, which is interrupted by Jimmy being called to the principal's office. En route to the principal's office, Jimmy is transported to the headquarters of the BTSO (Big Top Secret Organization), and meets Commander Baker, who tasks Jimmy with finding a missing BTSO agent, Agent X. Jimmy accepts the mission, and, along with Carl and Sheen, heads to a spot in the Pacific Ocean where Agent X's locating device was last located. After finding a message leading them to Mt. Everest, Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen meet a femme fatale named Beautiful Gorgeous. After she attempts to kill them, Jimmy Carl, and Sheen escape and head to Mt. Everest.

After arriving at the mountain, Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen end up getting separated, with Jimmy ending up in an isolation cell along with Agent X, who is, in fact, none other that Jet Fusion himself. Jet, as it turns out, was on the trail of a maniacal villain who had a plan to destroy the world. The villain that Jet was following was none other than Jimmy's old nemesis, Professor Finbarr Calamitous. Prof. Calamitous, as it turned out, had created a plan called "Operation Meltdown" The plan was to melt all of the snow from Mt. Everest, thereby flooding the Earth. However, Prof. Calamitous has his daughter, who is none other than Beautiful Gorgeous, execute both Jimmy and Jet. After making their escape, Jimmy knocks out Beautiful by making a makeshift Hypno Beam. Afterwards, Jimmy and Jet deactivate "Operation Meltdown," but accidentally activate a self destruct mechanism. The two make their way down the mountain, while Beautiful and Prof. Calamitous roll down the mountain in a giant snowball.

Meanwhile, Carl and Sheen are found by a group of monks, who take them to a place called Shangri Llama. Beautiful and Prof. Calamitous soon arrive and are promptly arrested. Meanwhile, Jimmy meets up with Carl, who is riding around on the back of a llama, and Sheen, who is the "chosen one," due to his being able to stick his foot behind his head. After returning to the BTSO, Commander Baker gives Jimmy a medal for his good work. After some words of encouragement from Jet, Jimmy has a fantasy about starring in his own spy movie, titled You Only Die in Tibet Twice (a nod to the title of the James Bond film You Only Live Twice).

There are two things that really make this one stand out, and one of them is the celebrity voice cast. First off, Christian Slater was terrific as Jet Fusion. while Wendie Malick was a true femme fatale as Beautiful Gorgeous. Michael Clarke Duncan was great as the voice of Commander Baker, and was a lot of fun with his commanding voice. However, my favorite voice actor was Tim Curry returning as Prof. Calamitous, who would remain a recurring villain in several episodes of the series. In my opinion, there is no other Jimmy Neutron villain that stands out nearly as much as Tim Curry as Prof. Calamitous. Another thing that stands out about this one is the way that they handle the spy stuff, including the nods and parodies of the many elements of the James Bond series. Unlike films like Austin Powers, which are straight-up comedies, Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion plays it all completely straight, and keeps it completely appropriate for the audience of kids that watch Nicktoons like Jimmy Neutron.

Overall, I definitely recommend Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion. It is currently streaming on Hulu, along with the rest of The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. I give Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion a rating of 5/5. This is Chuck signing off. See you guys next time.
